Life can be hard at times, and sometimes we get stuck in uncomfortable situations and patterns, as a result. Counseling can help bridge the gap between the difficulties that we are experiencing and how we perceive these experiences. Sometimes reaching out to someone to help untangle our current or past stressors can be a difficult step. But, once that first step is taken, the results can prove to be life changing.
What are the benefits of therapy?
Counseling can be a rewarding experience, as it can sometimes improve your quality of life. Working with a therapist/counselor is different from sharing problems with friends and family. Therapists are trained professionals who will assist you in developing your problem solving and communication techniques by utilizing a specific structure, theories, and strategies.
Is counseling for me?
Making the first step to seek counseling can sometimes be frightening, as we do not know what to expect. Therapy will be a collaborative process in which you and your therapist will work together to determine what will be the best way to address any issues that are currently affecting your life.
How long will therapy/counseling last?
Therapy/counseling will typically occur on a weekly basis. Sessions are 50 minutes in length. You and your therapist will determine what length of time will ensure that your goals are met. Every client is different and every situation is different, so the total duration of therapy will be individualized for each client and their own personal necessities.
How do I know which Counselor is a good fit?
Finding a “good” therapist follows the same guidelines as finding a “good” doctor or dentist. It is important that you feel connected to your therapist and are able to speak freely and honestly to him/her. Usually, it can take at least three (3) sessions to determine if your counselor is a “good” fit with your style. Every therapist is different and every therapist’s style and technique is different. The most important part is choosing one whom you feel comfortable with.
